5 Beautiful Temples To Visit During Your Trip To Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta has so much to offer, and some of the best attractions we can find in this area are temples. Yogyakarta and Central Java are ideal destination to see the island’s rich heritage that dates back to several centuries. 1. Candi Borobudur

One of the most popular destinations in Java will be the Borobudur temple. This temple is located in Central Java but can be easily reached from Yogyakarta. Borobudur temple is the biggest Buddhist temple, which previously listed as one of the world’s seven wonders. The temple is located majestically on a hilltop overlooking mountains, lush green fields, and distant hills.

Borobudur was built in the 9 th century during the reign of the Syailendra dynasty. It was buried under volcanic ash until rediscovered back in 1815.

Borobudur temple is quite easy to reach, it's located in Magelang, 90 minutes drive from Yogyakarta. This location can be easily visited using a scooter or a car.

2. Candi Prambanan

Another popular temple in Yogyakarta is Prambanan temple, this one is located in the east part of Yogyakarta, around 17 kilometers from the town. Prambanan is Hindu temple built in the ninth century. It has around 240 major and minor temples with only 18 of those are successfully restored. The rest remain scattered as piles of stones.

3. Candi Sewu

This one is actually located in the same area as Prambanan temple, we can find this beautiful temple in the northern part of Prambanan's area. Sewu is the second largest Temple in the area. Sewu is a Buddhist temple built near Prambanan Temple, which is a Hindu temple, indicated that they lived in harmony.

After viewing Prambanan temple, you can walk to this area. Sewu Temple is less crowded compared to the Prambanan.

4. Ratu Boko

This attraction can be the next place to go after Prambanan temple. Known as Ratu Boko palace, this is located on the hillside plateau 196 meters above sea level, around 3 kilometers to the south from Prambanan Temple. Here, tourists can enjoy the views of Yogyakarta City and Prambanan Temple with a beautiful background of Mount Merapi.

5. Candi Plaosan

Another attraction we can visit after Prambanan temple is Plaosan. Plaosan is located in the Bugisan village, around one kilometer northwest of Prambanan. The Plaosan temple complex occupies a whopping 2,000 square meters and has two main sections, including Plaosan Lor dan Kidul.

Lor is a Javanese word that means north) and kidul is a Javanese word for the south. Plaosan is Buddhist temple with an amazing mix of Buddhist and Hindu culture that is clear from the architecture structure and shape of the temple. The top of the shrine shows the characteristic of Hindu worship place, while the base of the temple shows the characteristic of the Buddhist structure.
